Food Review: Taco Bell (Mild) Tortilla Chips

Sometimes when I’m out shopping, I’ll find something that makes me want to buy it and try it. Such was the case on a recent trip to Sam’s Club, where they were selling the Taco Bell (Mild) Tortilla Chips.

The Packaging

As you can tell, the bag for the Taco Bell (Mild) Tortilla Chips looks like one of their mild taco sauce packets, only with chips on the packaging. I was kinda hoping to find “hot” or “diablo,” but alas, mild was all that Sam’s carried. I believe these are being sold in mild, fire, and classic flavors in stores.

The Chips

When I opened the bag, The Taco Bell (Mild) Tortilla Chips smelled like the Taco Bell taco seasoning for hamburger meat. And as you can see, the chips are heavily seasoned.

Unfortunately, the taste of the seasoning was like the Taco Bell taco seasoning for hamburger meat in its powered form. Personally, I love the flavor of this seasoning when it is cooked into crumbled hamburger meat. But as a seasoning for a tortilla chip, it wasn’t doing much for me. 😅

Further, the texture and crunch of the Taco Bell (Mild) Tortilla Chips was akin to that of a taco shell rather than that of an actual tortilla shell. I was expecting it to be like Doritos in terms of texture and crunch. I do love hard-shelled tacos and always buy three, hard-shelled taco supremes at Taco Bell. But in chip form, I just didn’t like them.

Trying to Like Them

I had gone to Taco Bell to get my standard order of three hard-shelled taco supremes and two five-layer burritos, and ate these chips along with my meal. I’m usually purposefully messy so that I can use tortilla chips to clean up the rest of the stuff that falls to my plate. But with the Taco Bell (Mild) Tortilla Chips, I just didn’t like them that much, even with the Taco Bell food remnants.

I didn’t want the chips to go to waste, so I used some nacho cheese dip. But here too, I found myself just not wanting to eat the Taco Bell (Mild) Tortilla Chips. I didn’t care for the flavoring of the chips, and I didn’t care for the texture and crunch of the chip, even when dipped in nacho cheese sauce.

Bottom Line

Sadly, because I had purchased my bag of Taco Bell (Mild) Tortilla Chips from Sam’s Club, that meant it was a giant bag. I managed to eat about half, but then I threw the rest away. With Doritos, I have to force myself to stop eating them, otherwise I’d eat a whole bag. But with Taco Bell (Mild) Tortilla Chips, I was having to force myself to keep eating them, just to get my money’s worth out of them.

But in the end, I opted to stop torturing myself and just tossed the bag in the trash. It sucks to waste food like that, but it was better than the alternative. Its a shame too ’cause I really wanted to like these chips.
