RIAA/MPAA

This is an OLD article and somehow I forgot to post it way back when. I had a bunch of crap to say back then, but I’ve forgotten it all now. Oh well. If you haven’t read it, here ya go.

I wonder how much more money RIAA could have made had they not tried to squash Napster way back when.

What a Headache

I’m waiting for the arrival of Chris to go through the tedious process of replacing parts on my main PC to see if these things magically fix the issue with the CPU fans. Somehow, I just feel that things are going to remain unresolved.

In other news, we ended up not going to Elizabeth for Tim’s piping. Apparently, the event was pretty horrible when Tim and his wife went down Saturday. So I took the opportunity of having a free Sunday by catching up on sleep. I really needed that, I can tell you. I may have overdone it a bit though because I’ve got a serious headache now (no doubt, part of that is just the waiting to see if my PC will actually be fixed this time).

Update: It was apparently the replacement motherboard, as Chris suspected before. So even though Dell sent a wide variety of other replacement parts, he just replaced the motherboard and all is well again with the PC.

Update 2: Dell India Support called wanting to know if my problem had been fixed. I told them it had and stressed that the problem had been the motherboard. Indian Dude wanted to know if all the parts had been replaced. I told him “No” because the problem was with the motherboard. The CPU fan, power supply w/ fans, & heat sink had never been the issue. It had always been the motherboard. I requested he note this in the ticket, but considering my experience in dealing with Indian support for my job, there’s only a 35% chance this will happen correctly.

So Tired

Man, it sucks to be me right now. The last three days have seen me get only about 4-hours of sleep each day. It is amazing how I can feel so exhausted and yet lay in bed for the longest time and not fall back asleep. *_* Well, I only have to make it through tonight at work and then I have the next four nights off. I’m going to have to make sure I get plenty of sleep Saturday night though. Sunday, Marc, Tim, and I will be in Elizabeth to witness Tim piping and other Irish/Scottish things (actually, I’m not sure which type of event we’ll be going to because my addled brain can’t remember).

OK, I hear my alarm clock going off in my bedroom. Time to jump into the shower and make sure I remember to pack some Amp.

Machine’s Back…maybe

Well, my main machine is back and working. And now, the fans are running like mad, something they didn’t do before. ^_^;;; It’s weird though.

So, I did some testing. Whenever the CPU (dual-core) gets used, the fans go faster. At 100%, its like a mini-hurricane. ^_^;;; Once I cut back on the applications using the CPU and the CPU percentage goes down, the fans slow down. Weird and annoying.

Now I’m on a chat with Dell. I didn’t want to be on hold for an hour or more. I can’t say this is any better though.

What Kind of Nerd is AstroNerdBoy?

I have this on my anime blog (thanks JSM!) and thought I’d share it with those of you who don’t visit there. ^_^

Does sitting by a nice cozy fire, with a cup of hot tea/chocolate, and a book you can read for hours even when your eyes grow red and dry and you look sort of scary sitting there with your insomniac appearance? Then you fit this category perfectly! You love the power of the written word and it’s eloquence; and you may like to read/write poetry or novels. You contribute to the smart people of today’s society, however you can probably be overly-critical of works.

It’s okay. I understand.

Productivity

As I’ve stated before, I’m a very lazy person. I don’t say that to brag, but simply state a fact — pointing out a serious flaw in my personage. Its pretty depressing when I think of it, but over my 3-day weekend, I felt somewhat motivated to get some things done. Granted, there’s not enough time to do it all (especially with as inefficient as I am and how easily I’m side-tracked by things), so I decided to do what I could and pray the Lord would give me the strength to do that much.

The Shamrock I won the other day came in a two-inch diameter plastic pot. It was cramped and I felt that if I was going to keep this plant alive, I needed to move it to a better pot. After consulting with my folks (who have grown plants for many years), I went to Wal-Mart and picked up a six-inch diameter ceramic green pot. It matches the Shamrock (I’ll take some poor pics at some point), so that meant getting some potting soil w/ plant food already inside (which was what the folks suggested). I did so, but got some that also had moisture control. I’ve only had one other plant in my life and it didn’t do too well, so this was something to help protect my plant (whether it works or not, who knows). Procuring these items (and some plant food sticks for down the road), I managed to re-pot the Shamrock and so far, so good. We’ll see how it survives.

Next on the to-do list I’ve already mention — shredding a year’s worth of credit card mailings and other personal papers I no longer require. Since I’ve already ranted on the credit card listings, I won’t rehash that. Still, there were a couple of bags of shreddings for other papers such as old medical bills, notices from my insurance company on what they paid, and so forth. Since all of these bills have either been paid or have been converted to a credit card (it sucks to pay interest, but it is nice to have a single bill vs. 20 bills), I saw no reason to keep them all any longer. Its amazing how long it took to go through all that and shred.

I got myself fitted for some shoes for my exercise class. At times, the treadmill has proven to cause me some pain and that was traced to my shoes. So while I did shift to a new pair of shoes I had in the closet, the lady that runs the class recommended getting some good shoes to handle my exercising. I talked with my friend and co-worker “Timmay” who happens to be a runner. He immediately let me know that he has to get new running shoes constantly and he goes to one of these specialty stores just to have his gate re-tested and to get the proper shoe.

So, all of this lead me to Fleet Feet in Boulder where I was tested, had my feet measured, and tried on shoes, all while the store owner’s very friendly young (but big) dog kept wanting attention. I spent a little over $100 for the New Balance shoes (something I’ve NEVER done before in my life, though I have purchased $100 shoes from a Nike factory outlet for around $50 on clearance). At 08:00, I’ll be trying them out in the exercise class.

I also took time to re-install Windows XP on my main system. I have had the worst time with Blue Screen of Death crashes, especially when I’m heavily doing file transfers via uTorrent. I’ve had the problem on this machine since I pulled it from the box. One of the big problems is Microsoft having multiple items on the same IRQ port (and Billy won’t allow you to manually move IRQ settings on a standard load of the O/S). Because I use my machine to the maximum (CPU, bandwidth), I’m one of those unfortunate saps who gets nailed by this since most folks would never be aware of it (indeed, I don’t crash when I scale back what I do). Full stress testing will need to be done still to see if the re-load worked (the reload was a near last resort since upgrading drivers, BIOS, and other things haven’t worked and Dell Support decided they were tired of going in circles since they don’t know exactly what’s causing the issue).

My garage has been purged of the old spider webs (of which there were many) and it has been sprayed down to keep the spider and bug population down (at least for a while).

Beyond doing some normal laundry, dishes, and mild cleaning, that was all I got accomplished this weekend. I’ve got a ton more things that need to be done around the house, not to mention getting my car into the shop to have the A/C fixed. Well, we’ll see what I get done next weekend.

Made It To Work

Well, I’m pretty exhausted, but I did manage get to work. Man, I’ll be glad when the coughing is gone and I can get some sleep. My sinuses kept me awake today and I was forced to snort the “good stuff” — the nasal inhalant decongestant that really opens up your nasal passages. I got a little sleep after I did that (about three hours). Now to struggle through tonight and Lord willing, get some sleep tomorrow.

This Old Illness

I was unable to make it into work tonight and I still feel cruddy. If my sinuses would let me sleep, I think this would have cleared already. Unfortunately, I just don’t get a lot of sleep and have to get up for a while to allow my nasal passages to open back up. I want to go to sleep now, but since I’m determined to go to work tonight, I’m going to try to stay up all night and just go to bed early this morning.

Man, it seems like I’ve been down for over a week rather than a few days.

New Blog Location

When I first thought of doing a blog in 2004, I just threw it up on my domain and went on about my business. However, it became apparent to me that because I didn’t have nifty interface abilities like BlogSpot has, updates would be a bit more troublesome. If I were going to write a post somewhere other than home, I’d have to write it in notepad, then send it to myself at home, then remember to upload it once I got home. Well, that worked some of the time, but most of the time, it didn’t. Thus, there were big gaps in when I’d post and because making posts were a bit more troublesome, I often didn’t bother when I’d remember. Yeah, I’m lazy.

Anyway, I recently felt the need to create an anime blog and because a co-worker/friend had a blog, I thought I’d try it out. Well, it worked so well that after a month, I felt that this would work perfectly for my intended original blog. We’ll see how things go, but I suspect I’ll post a bit more frequently now that I’m here.

I’ve moved all of the old blog posts (save one which was anime related) here. I’ve opened things up for comment, so we’ll see how that goes too. ^_^;;;
